The “learned system” or “learning” is the product of formal instruction and it comprises a conscious process which results in conscious knowledge about the language, for example knowledge of grammar rules. According to Krashen ‘learning’ is less important than ‘acquisition’. To consider that the distinction of language acquisition and language learning for English as a foreign language happens in Indonesia, it should be seen from the way Indonesian people view the target language. Literally, foreign language acquisition and foreign language learning are parallel processes. They are ruled by the same mechanisms, procedures and strategies. Learning English is probably facilitated by the knowledge of Indonesian as the foreign language this is due to the fact that Indonesian society never uses English in their daily conversation. As known that language acquisition is the ability of the brain in its cognitive development & process to conceptualize concepts, structures and semantics in a language, while learning is the active participation and effort to learn a language. It develops familiarity with the phonetic characteristics of the language as well as its structure and vocabulary, and is responsible for oral understanding, the capability for creative communication and for the identification of cultural values.
However, in Indonesia, the culture values of English are not acquired but learned, meaning that the act of internalizing language to which Indonesian people have been exposed without the deliberate memorization of a word and its definition is not implemented well. Therefore, language input should be turned into language ‘intake’ which is acquired and transferred from short to long term memory. Without these, language acquisition may not take place for language learners in an immersion setting. In short, Indonesian people can rely on the environment to provide input and language acquisition just happens magically with repeat exposure to the target language
In Indonesia, English as a foreign language, language teachers devise methods as components of language acquisition, while learners use them to learn. There is an important distinction made by linguists between language acquisition and language learning. Children acquire language through a subconscious process during which they are unaware of grammatical rules. This is similar to the way they acquire their first language. They get a feel for what is and what isn’t correct. In order to acquire language, the learner needs a source of natural communication. The emphasis is on the text of the communication and not on the form. In language learning, students have conscious knowledge of the new language and can talk about that knowledge.
